First time at the gym is intimidating

On the last day of December last year, I decided it was time to get in better physical shape.

I wanted to lose weight, tone muscles and elevate my overall health.

My job is extremely sedentary and it’s very easy to snack and avoid physical activity. At the conclusion of the workday, I lacked the energy and dedication to exercise. I typically used the drive-thru for dinner and then spent the rest of the evening sitting on the couch and watching TV. On New Year’s Eve, after a bit too much wine, I suddenly got excited to make changes. I checked online and came across an ad for the local fitness center. They were offering a special that provided huge savings on a year-long membership. I supplied all the necessary information, typed in my credit card numbers and a couple of minutes later, I was signed up as a new member of the gym. I went on a virtual tour of the facility and the amenities. A staff member showed how to properly use and adjust all the various types of equipment. I was really eager to get started. I immediately purchased an impressive wardrobe of specialized workout clothing. I bought shirts and shorts that are designed from breathable fabrics and encourage freedom of movement. I bought expensive running sneakers and treated myself to a super fancy water bottle. Physically stepping inside the gym was a bit scary and overwhelming. The virtual tour wasn’t the same as the reality. Instead of an empty facility and a friendly staff member, there were a lot of people who seemed really comfortable and fit. I realized I had no clue how to get started. I started with the stationary bike because it seemed easy. I figured I could pedal without embarrassing myself. So I rode the bike for an hour. I burned quite a few calories. My legs were sore, but I jumped right back on the bike the following day. I eventually gained the confidence to try out the treadmill. I then moved onto other machines.
