I’m always hard up for cash so when I heard of a one-time weekend gig that paid cash at the end, I couldn’t resist learning more. I found out that I would be one of those people holding advertising signs at street corners. How hard could it be? The pay was good, so I decided to go for it. What I didn’t take into consideration was the fact that it was the middle of summer in the south. I wasn’t particularly vulnerable to the heat, so I didn’t see a problem with standing outside for five hours. It was a pretty miserable day. The temperatures were in the high nineties and my corner had no shade. I was soaked with sweat the first hour out there. All I could think of was cool air conditioning. By the second hour, I had taken a restroom break at a fast food place and took longer than necessary so that I could enjoy that nice, cool air conditioning. Within three hours of starting, my back started to hurt and my thoughts drifted to me sitting in my favorite chair at home enjoying the cool air conditioning. By hour four, the coordinator came by in his big air conditioned truck so that I could cool off. I was so embarrassed. I found out later that he did that for everybody. Needless to say, I was happy at the end of the day to get home into my air conditioning.
