My dad owns an HVAC company here in town and he rules the place with an iron fist, so to speak.
He never lets anyone influence the way that he does business at all. He likes to do things his way, and he is fond of telling people that it’s his way or the highway. I went to school for marketing and advertising and I kept telling my dad that we should run some advertising specials to help him increase business at the HVAC company. He just thought it was a bad idea and he insisted that he didn’t need any help increasing the amount of business at the HVAC company. He said that word of mouth was the only sort of advertising that he had ever needed and he wasn’t planning on changing that now. I told him that he was being ridiculous, because everyone can use some HVAC marketing once in a while! I bugged him about it for a long time, but I couldn’t ever get him to change his mind. Then I guess he noticed that one of his competitors in the HVAC business was running an air conditioning maintenance special for the summer and that totally made the difference. As soon as he saw the ad for that other heating and cooling company and their A/C special, he called me up and told me that he was ready to do some advertising! I’m glad, because I like to see his HVAC company doing well. I know that when we run the ad for his business, it will increase his profits.
