My Kid can’t be Trusted with a Smart Thermostat

I don’t recognize what I was thinking when I let our son have access to the smart thermostat! He was saying that he should be allowed access during the times when my spouse as well as I are not home.

I thought this was passable because why shouldn’t he be allowed to be comfortable when we are not home? Well, when he first started using the smart control unit while we were gone, he was mostly just playing with the temperature control settings. He kept turning on the furnace as well as then would hastily turn on the cooling system. He thought it was cool how he could do that so easily from just hitting the buttons on his phone. Well, he did this so many times, he ended up causing the Heating, Ventilation & A/C system to shut off. Luckily, it wasn’t anything too serious and my spouse and I were able to get the Heating, Ventilation & A/C system fixed. I warned our son not to do anything like that again, the smart app on his phone was not a video game. He said he understood and promised it wouldn’t happen again. I easily should have ended his access to the temperature control settings right then and there, but no, I let him continue to use it. We didn’t have an Heating, Ventilation & A/C system breakdown after that, although I did become furious when I saw the utility bills. I found that he was blasting the cooling system whenever my spouse and I were not home. He would always put the temperature control settings at 65! When I saw the utility bills, I finally took away his access to the temperature control. Now we keep it locked in at around 78 degrees.
