My Kid doesn’t Deserve Access to the Smart Thermostat

I can’t imagine what I was thinking when I let my kid have access to the smart thermostat. She was saying that she should be allowed access during the times when my spouse and I are not home. I thought this was sufficient because why shouldn’t she be allowed to be comfortable when we are not home? Well, when she first started using the smart thermostat when my spouse and I were gone, she was mostly just playing with the temperature control settings. She kept turning on the furnace and then would rapidly turn on the cooling system. She thought it was legitimately cool how she could do that so easily from just hitting the buttons on her phone. She did this so many times, she ended up causing the whole heating and cooling system to shut down. Luckily, it wasn’t anything too dire and we were able to get the heating and cooling system fixed. I warned my kid not to do that again; the smart app on her phone was not a video game. She said she understood and it wouldn’t happen again. I legitimately should have ended her access to the temperature control settings right then and there, however no, I let her continue to use it. Fortunately, we didn’t have an HVAC system breakdown after that, even though I did become furious when I saw the utility bills. I learned that she was blasting the air conditioner regularly when my spouse and I were not home. She would regularly put the temperature control settings at 65, and that is totally unacceptable! When I saw the utility bills, I finally took away her access to the temperature control. Now my spouse and I keep it locked in at around 70 degrees.
