My neighbor lost his home because his fireplace caused it to burn down

I feel extremely bad for my neighbor! He is an elderly man, and he actually lost his residence! It burned down.

  • I believe his fireplace caught his residence on fire while he was trying to sleep.

He told me that he didn’t usually take a nap during the day, although he was totally exhausted that day. He actually went to lie down and apparently, a piece of wood that he had put in his fireplace fell out onto the carpet. It caught the carpet on fire and spread throughout his downstairs area. Luckily, he was woken up by the acrid smell of the smoke. He was able to get out in time. He lost everything in the downstairs area of his residence. I told him that he could stay with me for as long as he needs to. I have a spare bedroom that he is currently using. He plans to rebuild his residence soon. He has lived there for over thirty years, and he does not want to relocate. It was the only residence that he and his wife lived in together. He said that he will not be adding a fireplace to his new residence though. He is rather uneasy about it now. I understand, of course. He said that he has never lived in a residence without a fireplace, so it will be odd at first, although he just doesn’t want to risk catching it on fire like that again. He is thinking about maybe using an electric fireplace instead. I told him that would be an excellent option. I am truly thankful that he is completely safe and is able to rebuild on his land.
