Choosing HVAC options for my new home

My wife and I have decided that instead of trying to buy a home that meets our specific needs, we are going to have our home built. It doesn’t actually cost much more than buying a house. Some people seem to think it’s twice the cost to build your own home, but (if you’re smart about it) the cost just about equals out. We’ve been working on this for a while and now we are at the HVAC installation stage of the process. I’ll have to admit, I didn’t realize there was so much variety in the HVAC world. I mean, I knew we wanted a smart thermostat to keep costs down and I knew that purchasing a furnace and air conditioner with a great SEER rating always helps, but this is a whole other world for us. We’re considering the use of a boiler rather than a furnace because it produces cleaner air and keeps heating costs down. Although, I worry about boiler leaks. That would be devastating in a new home especially. We are also looking at ductless, multi split air conditioning rather than the ducted air conditioning we’ve always had. The multi split air conditioning can last a lifetime and it looks really sleek as well. We’ve looked into heat pumps and hybrid heating, but after we did our research we decided against the extra cost. Plus, we live in an environment with pretty chilly winters and heat pumps don’t tend to do as well. If any of you who work in the home comfort business have any suggestions, please let us know! We could sure use your help!
