Churches and Air Conditioning

I grew up near a religious sect called the Shakers, an offshoot of the better-known Quakers.

They were once known as Shaking Quakers because they would often tremble when overcome with religious fervor during Sunday services.

And what services they were! As a boy my Methodist parents wanted to expose their kids to other forms of worship, so we attended a Shaker service one hot summer Sunday. I remember the stark wooden pews, old men and old women seated separately, the women weeping, the bearded men all dressed in blue shirts and pants with suspenders, and no music. At first, I was scared when the preacher entered the “hell and brimstone” phase of his weekly message but then, I realized that it was sweltering hot in that Puritan setting where I was forced to sit for what seemed an eternity. That Shaker church certainly needed an HVAC system, but the sect had a larger issue in that they did not believe in marriage and considered sex a sin. Unable to induce enough outside converts into their fold, the cause of their dwindling attendance was obvious. By comparison, my Methodist upbringing seemed fun, but I noticed that the summer attendance would dwindle as well (thankfully for other reasons). Years later funds were raised to install an HVAC system and I was told by the current minister that attendance and donations had significantly improved afterward. Small community churches are usually on a tight budget, but in this case, the installation of the HVAC system was a great investment. And after some searching in biblical texts, I have yet to discover a divine directive that we should be uncomfortable while worshipping.
