How could the estimate double because of the flooring?

My wife and I were considering making some renovations in our home.

When our last child left for college, it seemed like the perfect time to make some changes.

We left the kids’ bedrooms exactly the same, but we closed in the garage and turned that space into a giant game room. My wife and I bought a giant television and a brand new gaming system. We bought a dartboard and a pool table and we lined the walls with memorabilia from our favorite sports teams. We purchased a couple of sofas from the furniture store and we also bought a bar that looks great in the corner. My wife and I thought about how we would heat the area and both of us decided that we wanted radiant heated flooring. My wife talked to a couple of contractors and we got estimates from three different people to have the radiant heated flooring installed. My wife and I chose our heating contractor and we made an appointment to get started. When the heating contractor came to talk with us about the final details, the guy told us that the estimate was twice as much as his original quote due to the flooring. I didn’t understand how my wife and I could end up with an estimate that was twice as large, but it sounded like the contractor was trying to cheat us so we decided to get someone else. The guy expected us to pay for his one day of labor after we canceled the deal, but we weren’t paying that guy a dime.
