I didn't really think the employees would strike

I have been in business for a long time.

  • My father started the company when I was a child and I took over when he was ready to retire.

The HVAC repair business is always busy, especially during the summer time. The summer season is our harshest of the four. The temperatures are often hot and humid with highs in the 90s or close to 100. I told all of the employees at the beginning of the season that everyone would be responsible to work on the weekends. No one was going to be off on Saturdays and Sundays every weekend. The full-time employees were upset about the new rules and regulations. The part-time employees weren’t happy either. All of the employees decide to get together and threaten to strike. They were only willing to work one weekend every month as long as there was someone to help out in the store. I really didn’t think the employees would strike, so I stood my ground. Friday is the busiest day of the week and they chose that day to strike. Instead of coming to work that morning, he’s one of the employees called with a different excuse. 11 guys did not show up for work that morning and I was stuck. I had to contact all of my part-time guys to get the work completed that day. On Monday morning, I sat down with all of the employees and we came up with a schedule that works for everyone. I could have fired each employee and started fresh, but some of these employees have been around for ten years or more.
