When I went to visit my sister in her new house, she offered me a place to stay for the night.
I didn’t live too far, but she was insistent on sleeping in her new guest bedroom.
She’d never owned a home with a guest bedroom before, so she was excited to decorate the space and make it cozy for her guests. I was the first guest to stay there, so I was honored. As I was getting ready for bed, I heard a soft noise, like a fan had been turned on. There wasn’t a freestanding fan anywhere, but I did notice a white, rectangular appliance on the wall above the bed. There was a green light on, indicating that it was running, even though I had no idea what it was. I asked my sister what it was, and she told me that it was a ductless mini split system. I’d never seen a ductless mini split system before, but I’d heard a little bit about them. My sister explained that it was another source of heat and air in the guest bedroom. According to her, the guest bedroom was difficult to heat and cool even though it was connected to the central ductwork. The previous owners had installed the ductless mini split system as a way to add more heat and air into that space, without affecting their central HVAC system. I wasn’t sure how I’d like sleeping in a room with this appliance running all evening, but I was pleasantly surprised. The ductless mini split system hardly made any noise, but it did an excellent job at keeping me comfortable while I slept.
